8. Big Boi - Sir Luscious Left-Foot: Son of Chico Dusty
Lyrical clusterbomb Big Boi may be legally prohibited from making eye-contact with fellow Atlantean and Outkast compatriot Andre 3000, but luckily for us that doesn’t seem to have affected his glorious weirdness. In a year packed with excellent hip-hop ranging from ‘non-traditional’ to flat-out loony, SLL:SOCD easily stands out*.
Of course with a record this unhinged not everything can totally work (the Jamie Foxx collaboration drives a steamroller over the line between sentimental and mawkish, but that might be my personal distaste for Mr. Foxx speaking), but the missteps are few and far between (also: GEORGE CLINTON). Of course, all this makes it all the more sad that we haven’t seen a proper Outkast album in almost a decade**. Get that sorted out people.
*Possibly too much, considering its disappointing sales. Maybe next time not quite so ridiculous a title Mr Boi?
**no, Idlewild doesn’t count
